Mission: to get my questions answered

What does the Audit Commission do?

We appoint and regulate external auditors to local authorities and NHS bodies in England. We monitor public expenditure and help improve methods and procedures to ensure best value. We ensure the proper stewardship of public finances and help those responsible for public services to achieve economy, efficiency and effectiveness.

Where do Trainee Auditors work?

At the Audit Commission, we work throughout England in local audit teams. If you join us as a Trainee Auditor, you'll be assigned a 'patch' within a geographical region and will work with a variety of our clients within that particular area gain a broad understanding of our work.  Because of this, having a driver's licence is not a requirement but is strongly recommended, especially if you'll be working in an area with limited public transport.

What can I expect during my training?

The role of Trainee Auditor is varied. It involves studying towards a CIPFA qualification and therefore attendance at a college on a day release or 'weekly block' basis. CIPFA can also be studied by correspondence. This scheme also involves a lot of site work at different places within a 'patch' - this may be the local council office or the local police department. It will also involve attendance at team meetings.

What support is available?

The Audit Commission has a comprehensive support system that includes help and training from a number of sources, including your Line Manager, your colleagues, College Tutors, other trainees, and a Student Liaison Officer.  You will also be assigned a 'buddy', who will act as a peer mentor for advice, support and encouragement throughout your training.  Extensive support for CIPFA qualifications is available through a generous study leave program and peer mentoring.

Do you specify a degree discipline?

We don't specify a degree discipline, and you may be surprised to learn that most of our graduate trainees come from non-accounting or finance related degree programs.  As a large part of your work will be dealing with people and recommending sound strategies for increased savings and best value, we are happy to consider your application as long as you are numerate and educated to degree level with a minimum of a 2.2 qualification in an academic discipline.
