Our work

Mission: to talk you through the work we do

Local Government

Mission: to be the best you can be / to understand the bigger picture

When you really stop and think about just how many public services you use every single day, it becomes obvious why it’s so important to champion the best possible spend of every single penny of public money which goes into delivering them. All £200 billion of it annually. Our work across local council services spans everything from education, social services and leisure to environmental and community services such as crime prevention, as well as central areas including planning, finance and HR. Through our far-reaching audit programme (Comprehensive Area Assessments), we work hard to understand the way local councils function inside-out, which take holistic views of all service providers to ensure better outcomes for citizens. The kind of change which every one of us could benefit from. See our website for more details on CAA.

Housing

Mission: to feel at home

As we all know, a home isn’t just a roof over your head. It’s something into which you put love and attention. Somewhere you can share with friends and family. Which is exactly why we work with housing organisations to improve their services, helping to create neighbourhoods where people enjoy their lives, not just exist. Building sustainable communities and improving services for vulnerable people. Freeing the thousands trapped in inadequate accommodation. But with an escalating need for affordable housing, this is quite a challenge. A challenge we can tackle together.

Health

Mission: to be healthy

Health – something none of us should ever take for granted. And with the NHS never far from the headlines, we all know it’s something we need to invest in. With ever more of us relying on the system, the challenges continue to grow, with MRSA, Nurse shortages and waiting lists being just a few of the issues on today’s agenda. At the Commission, we play an important role in tackling these issues, working in partnership with the Healthcare Commission and other national bodies. Leaders in NHS financial management issues, we oversee a £60 million audit business in this sector. A big responsibility when you consider every pound could help save a life.

Criminal Justice and Community Safety

Mission: to choose life

Crime and fear of crime are invariably top, or close to the top of our concerns in this country. Its ripple effect can extend far beyond the immediate victims – family and strangers alike can also be affected. Lives destroyed through a downward spiral of anti-social behaviour which has the potential to undermine whole neighbourhoods. Getting to the source of this problem is of utmost importance on the government agenda. And as such, is one of our priorities too. Making sure crime doesn’t pay isn’t just about having more police on the streets, but also by giving them access to reliable and timely information. Supporting the police and probation services to understand the needs of real people in the community. So that ultimately you, I and everyone we know can sleep easy at night.

Fire & Rescue Services

Mission: to save lives

Each year, hundreds of people lose their lives in fires and thousands more are injured. Responding to these emergencies, but above all working to prevent them through education, is a top priority for the fire services. Ensuring they have the best possible resources to do it is ours. Through the new National Framework, which sets an overall vision for the fire authorities, England last year had the lowest levels of deaths from fires in fifty years. But, of course, we must work harder still and building on this success is an ever evolving challenge.
